My wife introduced me to the O'Neill Brothers back when we started dating, and Through the Years has been a favorite CD in our house ever since.
I love that it starts with some truly classic older movie themes, such as “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “As Time Goes By”—songs that bring back very fond memories of my grandmother singing to me as a child—and moves through to recent years with the themes from such movies as Schindler's List and The Patriot.
While any movie buff would readily be able to name a good handful of themes that are equally beautiful and famous, I don't think many of them would have been quite so conducive to presentation in such a relaxing and melancholy form. With only a piano and one or two other instruments per track, this album is soothing and enjoyable to listen to in its elegance. The piano playing is emotive, easily evoking an ambiance of nostalgia that carries you along on these beautiful pieces of music. The album concludes with two original works by the O'Neill Brothers that display the skill and creativity of these musicians in how well the compositions fit the themes and style of the rest of the selections.
I highly recommend this album; whether you want to give a parent or grandparent a walk down memory lane, enjoy some excellent dinner music, or you are a movie buff, this album is sure to provide many hours of repeated enjoyment.
